Get to know the music of Apurv Agrawal.
As we approach Independence Day, we’re celebrating some of the country’s finest independent musicians. This time around, we’re chatting with Mumbai-based musician, Apurv Agrawal. Apurv’s music under the moniker ‘Cowboy and Sailor Man’ has been making waves in the indie scene with its synth wave aesthetic and nostalgic vibe.
We had a brief chat with Apurv about his music influences and more. Here’s what he had to say:
When did your musical journey start? Tell us about the history.
I think I was 4 or 5 when I started playing keyboard and like any respectable teenager would, I moved on to guitar later. I was 13 when I started playing in my first band – Auxiliary Triangle. I lived in Indore at the time. Right after high school I left for music college at McNally Smith College of Contemporary Music in Saint Paul, US where I pursued a 4 year bachelors degree in music production. I’d say these were definitely the transformative years. I gained a lot of exposure during this time and lay the foundation of everything I’m doing today. Rest is history I guess.
How would you describe the music you make?
This is a tough one. I’ve always had a strong inclination to indie and punk music whether it’s indie rock or dream pop or shoegaze or emo or noise or hardcore. I’d say it’s a combination of all of those that I’m doing today.
How do you think your music represents you on a personal level?
It’s very important to me to be honest with my music. I hope my music represents me exactly as I am on a personal music. That was the plan anyway.
What do you do when you’re not making music?
I love photography. That’s definitely something I spend a lot of time with when I’m not playing music. I also record, mix and produce bands for a living so that takes up a big chunk of my time. Apart from that im an avid record collector and used gear fiend on the internet. I’ll spend hours on Craigslist and other used gear forums.
Who are your biggest influences?
Pavement, Sonic Youth, Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine, Capn Jazz, American football, Deerhoof, Gorillaz, Radiohead , At the Drive In, Interpol. List goes on and on. Lots of post hardcore and post punk bands. I’ve been really into some weird avant / art rock lately.
Name your 5 favourite albums of all time.
American Football – American Football
Deerhoof – Offend Maggie
Cap N Jazz – analphabetapolothology
MY Bloody Valentine – MBV
D’Angelo – Voodoo I’m sure I’m missing a few that I really really love.
Which Indian indie act are you listening to right now? What do you like about their music?
Begum. I love that band! I love the songwriting and the how their records sound. All that lofi goodness! They’re great to watch live too.
What are you plans for the future?
Working on a full length as far as Cowboy And Sailor Man goes, and hopefully a small tour of some tier 2 cities in India. Aside from that im working towards getting my label – Inspirus Records up and running in India this year. Thats high up on the priority list.
